James F. Simermeyer, Attorney at Law
Mr. Simermeyer has practiced Native American, local, state, and federal law since he was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1979. Since then, he has practiced in the United States District Court for the Eastern and Southern Districts of New York and is permitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States.
His concern for successfully representing individuals as well as Native American tribes, bands, communities and associations was most recently showcased in the landmark decision by U.S. District Court Judge Kiyo Matsumoto for the Eastern District of New York in the granting of sovereign immunity to the Unkechaug Nation based on the Montoya criteria. The case has already won recognition and will be discussed by Professor Emeritus of History John Strong at what is considered the most important international conference on American Indian and Inuit studies in the world, the American Indian Workshop (AIW), this March in Prague.
